Toshio Matsumoto, a renowned Japanese film director, was born on March 25, 1932, in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan. He graduated from Tokyo University in 1955, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.

Matsumoto's creative endeavors spanned multiple mediums, including film, multimedia, and video. He was a pioneer in the avant-garde experimental film movement, not only in Japan but also internationally.

In 1955, Matsumoto created his first short film, Ginrin, which laid the foundation for his future works. However, it was his 1969 film, Funeral Parade of Roses, that cemented his reputation as a master of experimental filmmaking.

Funeral Parade of Roses, also known as Bara no soretsu, was a groundbreaking film that heavily influenced Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. The film was a unique retelling of Oedipus Rex, featuring a transgender protagonist, Pîta, who navigated the world of Japanese hostess clubs.

In addition to his work in film, Matsumoto was a prolific photographer and artist. He published numerous books of his photography and art, showcasing his versatility and creative range.

Throughout his career, Matsumoto held various academic positions, including professor and dean of Arts at the Kyoto University of Art and Design. He was also the President of the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences, further solidifying his influence in the Japanese art world.

Matsumoto passed away on April 12, 2017, leaving behind a legacy of innovative and thought-provoking works that continue to inspire and influence artists to this day.
