Vallo Toomla was born on April 8, 1983, in Estonia, where he would go on to become a renowned film director. Prior to pursuing a career in the film industry, Toomla studied theology at the University of Tartu, where he also honed his acting skills by participating in productions at the Tartu University Theater.
From 2008 to 2012, Toomla continued his education at the Baltic Film and Media School, where he studied film directing under the guidance of renowned instructor Jüri Sillart. During his time at the school, Toomla produced several student films, including "Koolja" (2009),which was selected for the Sleepwalkers program at the Dark Nights Film Festival sub-festival and went on to win the award for best short film in Estonia.
Toomla's student films have been showcased on Estonian National Broadcasting and have even been screened in Estonian cinemas, with his short film "Saatana Vaudeville" (2010) being a notable example. In 2013, Toomla collaborated with the Nukufilm film studio to complete the animated film "Limonaadi lugu".
Toomla made his feature film debut with the film "Delusion", which premiered at the prestigious San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2016. In 2019, he completed the documentary film "Marju Lepajõe. The words of the days", a portrait film about the life and work of Marju Lepajões, a renowned religious historian, classical philologist, and translator who served as a lecturer at the University of Tartu.
Throughout his career, Toomla has consistently demonstrated his versatility and talent as a filmmaker, experimenting with different genres and mediums to produce thought-provoking and engaging works that have resonated with audiences around the world.
