As a teenager, Clements started playing for bluegrass legend Bill Monroe, becoming a regular member of the Bluegrass Boys in 1949. From 1957 to 1961, Clements performed with bluegrass stalwarts Jim and Jesse McReynolds, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile and talented musician.

After a brief hiatus from music, Clements returned to the scene in 1967, making Nashville, Tennessee, his home. He participated in recording sessions, played tenor banjo at the "Dixieland Landing" Club, and toured with Faron Young. In 1971, Clements joined John Hartford and his Dobrolic Plectral Society, a collaboration that would last for many years.

Throughout his illustrious career, Clements worked with an impressive array of artists, including Jerry Garcia, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Johnny Cash, David Grisman, Dickey Betts, Paul McCartney, Linda Ronstadt, The Del McCoury Band, Gordon Lightfoot, Jimmy Buffett, The Grateful Dead, J.J. Cale, The Byrds, Hank Williams, Earl Scruggs, and The Allman Brothers. He recorded twenty-seven solo albums and played on over 200 albums, showcasing his incredible range and versatility.
