Biography

Vijay Singh is a multifaceted individual, hailing from India, with a remarkable career as a historian, filmmaker, and writer, currently residing in Paris.

After completing his education in History at St Stephen's College, Delhi University, and the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, Vijay moved to the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, to pursue his doctoral work.

Throughout his academic tenure, Vijay began contributing articles to prominent French publications, including Le Monde, Le Monde Diplomatique, Libération, and The Guardian, showcasing his versatility and talent for writing.

As he delved deeper into literary work, Vijay authored several books that garnered widespread critical acclaim. Some of his notable works include 'Jaya Ganga, In Search of the River Goddess', 'La Nuit Poignardée', 'Whirpool of Shadows', 'The River Goddess', and 'Gange, fleuve et déesse'. These books have been translated and published in various European languages.

Vijay's foray into filmmaking began with the play 'Waiting for Beckett by Godote' in 1976, followed by 'Man and Elephant'/'Chami & Ana The Elephant' in 1989/1990. His feature film 'Jaya Ganga' received international acclaim, running for 49 weeks in Paris cinemas before being showcased in over 80 cinemas in the UK and several festivals.

Subsequent films include 'One Dollar Curry', released in France, the UK, and India, and 'India by Song', which won the River to River Digichannel Audience Award for Best Documentary at the River to River 2010 Florence Indian Film Festival. Vijay's latest film is 'Farewell My Indian Soldier' (French title: 'Adieu mon soldat indien'; first presented as 'Mademoiselle France pleure').

Throughout his illustrious career, Vijay has received numerous accolades, including the Prix Villa Médicis hors les murs for foreign literature in 1990, the Bourse Léonardo de Vinci in 1994, the Director in Focus Award in Dublin in 2012, and the Roll of Honour award by the Board of Governors of the Punjab Public School Nabha, India.
