Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS, was a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.

Born on October 13, 1925, in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, Thatcher was the daughter of Alfred Roberts, a shopkeeper, and Beatrice Ethel (née Stephenson),a pharmacist.

Thatcher was educated at the local grammar school, Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School, and later studied at the University of Oxford, where she earned a degree in chemistry.

After graduating, Thatcher worked as a research chemist for a pharmaceutical company and later became a barrister, specializing in tax law.

In 1951, Thatcher married Denis Thatcher, a businessman, and they had two children, Mark and Carol.

Thatcher's entry into politics began in the 1950s, when she became involved with the local Conservative Party and later became the first woman to be elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1959.

She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Shadow Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1975 and later the Leader of the Opposition in 1975.

In 1979, Thatcher won the general election and became the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, a position she held until 1990.

During her tenure, Thatcher implemented various policies, including privatization, reducing the power of trade unions, and increasing defense spending.

Thatcher was known for her strong leadership, her "Iron Lady" persona, and her unwavering commitment to her principles.

After leaving office, Thatcher remained active in politics and was granted a life peerage in 1992.
