Biography

Willie Dixon, a renowned musician, was brought into this world in the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi. His mother, a devout and deeply religious individual, devoted a considerable amount of time to crafting religious poems, thereby introducing young Willie to the intricacies of rhyming and meter. This early exposure had a profound impact on Willie's future endeavors, shaping his understanding of the art of music. As a young man, Willie Dixon had the privilege of singing with a gospel group known as the Union Jubilee Singers, who regularly performed on the airwaves of WQBC, a prominent radio station in Vicksburg.

From a tender and impressionable age, Dixon and his two companions found themselves entangled in a predicament of mischievous proportions, as they were apprehended by the authorities for the alleged theft of wood and assorted items from the residence of a respected medical professional.

Subsequently, they were transported to a correctional institution, specifically a prison farm, where they were to serve out their sentence.

However, it appears that Dixon's passion for music was not extinguished by his experiences, and he eventually abandoned his brief foray into the world of boxing, opting instead to rekindle his first love, the art of singing.

Notably, in the year 1936, Dixon embarked on a remarkable journey by train-hopping from his hometown of Mississippi to the bustling metropolis of Chicago, renowned for its thriving music scene. Concurrently, he maintained his involvement in the world of boxing, going on to claim the prestigious title of Illinois Golden Gloves Boxing Champion in 1937.

Furthermore, Dixon transitioned to a professional boxing career, where he had the unique opportunity to engage in sparring matches with none other than the formidable heavyweight champion, Joe Louis. However, his professional boxing endeavors ultimately came to a close following a tumultuous altercation with his manager over financial disputes.

Noteworthy musician Willie Dixon's musical endeavors commenced with the acquisition of bass playing skills, subsequently leading to the formation of a musical ensemble, aptly titled The Five Breezes, in the year 1939. This group, comprising guitarist Leonard Caston, performed at various nightclubs within the Chicago metropolitan area, managed to record a few tracks, yet ultimately disbanded in 1941 due to Dixon's decision to refuse military service, resulting in his subsequent arrest.

Following the completion of his sentence, Dixon went on to form yet another musical ensemble, The Four Jumps of Jive, which tirelessly toured the vibrant nightlife of Chicago, captivating audiences in various clubs throughout the city. Notably, this group managed to record a few singles for Mercury Records, further solidifying Dixon's reputation as a talented musician. Subsequently, Dixon reunited with his old friend Caston to form The Big Three, alongside Bernardo Dennis, and continued to hone his craft in the city's thriving blues scene. Additionally, Dixon had the privilege of sharing the stage with some of the greatest blues legends of all time, including the iconic Muddy Waters, in the South Side's esteemed blues clubs.

In the year 1948, Dixon had the fortunate opportunity to meet the brothers Phil Chess and Leonard Chess, the esteemed proprietors of the esteemed Macomba Lounge. As a result of this encounter, he was presented with a job offer at Chess Records, a prominent record label, in the capacity of a songwriter and producer. Dixon, seizing the opportunity, soon transitioned into a full-time role at Chess Records, where he penned songs for a plethora of talented artists, including the legendary Muddy Waters, the influential Howlin' Wolf, and the virtuosic Little Walter.

The year 1957 marked a significant turning point in the illustrious career of Willie Dixon, as he bid farewell to Chess Records and embarked on a new creative journey with Cobra Records. During his two-year tenure with Cobra, Dixon had the privilege of collaborating with an impressive roster of guitarists, including the renowned Buddy Guy and Otis Rush.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Dixon's creative pursuits expanded to encompass the realm of film soundtracks, with his notable contribution being the score for Martin Scorsese's critically acclaimed 1986 cinematic masterpiece, The Color of Money.

In the year 1980, Dixon's esteemed career was marked by a significant milestone, as he was formally inducted into the Blues Foundation's prestigious Hall of Fame, a testament to his enduring impact on the genre.

Throughout the 1980s, Dixon continued to hone his craft by performing at renowned clubs, attending esteemed festivals, and embarking on extensive tours across the United States and Europe, while simultaneously dedicating himself to his songwriting and producing endeavors.
