Biography

Youssef Idris, a renowned Egyptian writer of short stories and novellas, was born in 1927 and embarked on a journey that would intertwine his passion for literature with his commitment to social and political activism. His academic pursuits led him to the Faculty of Medicine, where he not only honed his medical skills but also became an outspoken critic of King Farouk's regime, using his platform to advocate for change. During his time at the faculty, Idris's talent for storytelling began to flourish, and his first short story was met with widespread acclaim from his peers. This early success only fueled his creative spark, and he continued to hone his craft, eventually leaving his medical career behind in 1960 to focus on his writing full-time. Idris's literary talents did not go unnoticed, and he was soon employed as an editor at Al-Gomhoreya newspaper in 1957. His short stories, which have become a staple of Middle Eastern literature, have been translated into numerous languages and have also been adapted into numerous short films, cementing his status as a master storyteller.
