Biography

Yu Gu is a renowned filmmaker born in Chongqing, China, and raised in Vancouver, Canada, where she developed a unique perspective on storytelling. Her documentary films, characterized by innovation, social awareness, and imagination, have garnered international recognition, traveling to festivals across the globe, from the United States to Germany and China.

Yu's filmmaking career began with her first short film, "Can't See for Looking," which was awarded a National Film Board of Canada grant and premiered in Canada. Her documentary, "City on the Verge," participated in the United Nations World Urban Forum III, shedding light on pioneering Vancouverites. In 2008, the mayor of Vancouver recognized her as the Best Emerging Filmmaker and New Media Artist.

Yu's academic background is equally impressive, with an MFA in film production from the University of Southern California, where she received the prestigious John Huston Award for Excellence in Directing. She was also a finalist in the 2008 Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmakers Contest, where she wrote and directed a 50-second commercial for Diet Coke.

Yu's short documentary, "A Moth in Spring" (2010),premiered at the Hot Docs International Film Festival in Toronto and has since received numerous awards, including those at the Palm Springs International Shortfest, Newport Beach Film Festival, and the Fotokem Silver Short Film Award. The Los Angeles Times film critic, Betsy Sharkey, praised the film, stating it was "beautiful and poignant, a strong sure voice." The documentary was also licensed by HBO.

In addition to her documentary work, Yu has collaborated with the Robert Redford Sundance Institute, working in both the Documentary Program and the Feature Film Program. She has created non-fiction content for companies such as Sweet Lady Jane and Loews Hotel. Yu is currently directing two feature documentary projects, "The House at Dayangba" (2012) and "American Dreamers" (2013).
