Leo Cauffield, a former counterespionage chief, resigns and becomes a journalist after failing to capture two fellow spies who defect to Moscow. He then moves to Beirut, where he starts an affair with Sally Tyler and persuades her to divorce her husband. However, their happiness is short-lived as Leo disappears a few years later, leading Sally to discover he may have defected to Moscow, a revelation she refuses to accept.
