A Navy jet-fighter attack squadron is being formed on the U.S.S. Essex, led by Commander Stanley Blair, a decorated Korean-war veteran. However, tensions arise between two pilots, James Delaney and Lieutenant Richard Huggins, who have different goals and conflicts in their personal lives. When Huggins gets lost in dense fog during a training flight, Delaney offers to lead him to safety.
