Andrew Sterling, a successful Black author, purchases a vacation home in a New England resort town, only to be mistaken for a burglar by the police. After a tense standoff, Chief Tolliver offers a thief named Amos Odell a deal: pretend to kidnap Andrew and then let him go. However, as Amos and Andrew try to escape, they realize that the Chief's problems would be solved if they were to die in a shootout, leading to a disastrous partnership as they attempt to evade the police.
