In a tumultuous era, a prince from Russia assumes a humble identity, while a mesmerizing cafe singer conceals her involvement in revolutionary movements. As their paths unexpectedly cross, a blossoming romance unfolds, defying the societal norms.

Prince Peter Karagin, a Cossack army officer, falls in love with Lydia Marakova after a chance encounter at the Balalaika cafe in St. Petersburg. He uses his influence to help her pursue a career at the opera house, unaware that she and her family are involved in a revolutionary movement. Their relationship is put to the test when the Cossacks violently disperse a rally, killing Lydia's brother, and she learns of a plot to assassinate Peter and his uncle, General Karagin, at the opera house. Despite the danger, Lydia warns Peter not to attend, but General Karagin decides to go, and Peter joins him.
