Eddie Condon, a small-time racketeer, partners with an alcoholic doctor, Judson, to open a maternity home offering free services to expectant mothers in exchange for their newborns' rights. The babies are then sold to willing couples for a hefty "contribution." However, when a stillborn baby is discovered, Condon refuses to refund the money, and a mix-up in certificates leads to a District Attorney's investigation.
