Edna Gladney, devastated by the loss of her son, devotes herself to reforming the system by establishing an orphanage where children without known parents can find a safe and loving home.

Edna, a newlywed, opens a home for foundlings and orphans after learning about the harsh treatment of children without parents. Despite opposition from conservative citizens, she fights to place children in good homes and eventually leads a campaign to remove the stigma of illegitimacy from birth records in Texas.
