In the town of Hangtown Mesa, three corrupt leaders - Judge Ezra Barnes, Clint Ranier, and Flash Hollister - maintain control. When the Rocky Mountain Telegraph Company threatens to disrupt their grip, they send for the Utah Kid to work against the company. The Utah Kid, wanted by the law, encounters Steve Collins, an engineer, on the way. Steve is forced to swap clothes with the Kid, who then heads to Hangtown Mesa. Steve, mistakenly identified as the Utah Kid, is arrested and later released by the Judge, who believes he is the man sent for. Steve is hired by the company's foreman, Bert Lawler, who is secretly working for the corrupt trio. As Steve takes over the work, he discovers that the real Utah Kid has already robbed the company's safe and killed John Wilkins, Betty's uncle.
