In Northern China, a young bar singer and her friends are forced to move to Peking after being evicted from their apartment. They rent rooms from a retired opera singer, who becomes their landlady. The free-spirited young people clash with their controlling landlady, playing pranks on her and violating rules. However, their behavior ultimately leads to a violation of trust, and the two generations must learn to understand and respect each other, forming a strong bond.
