Carmelita, a Manhattan-based performance artist, is mugged by a young woman named Cordelia after a show. The next day, Carmelita, her friend Orchida, and her sister Sophia are arrested while protesting anti-abortion activists outside a women's health clinic. As they await their fate in a cell, relationships between the four women evolve and transform over the course of the afternoon.
