Billy Bigelow, who has been dead for 15 years, wants to return to Earth to help his family, specifically his wife Julie and their child he never met, with a problem that has arisen. He must first get permission from the gatekeeper, who is intrigued by his story. Billy and Julie met when he worked as a carousel barker, despite initially saying they didn't believe in love or marriage. However, their marriage was marked by financial struggles, as Billy lost his job after the carousel owner, Mrs. Mullin, became attracted to him and fired him. Billy's attempts to become the breadwinner through criminal associations ultimately led to his death. Now, he hopes to make amends and express his true feelings to Julie.
