Air Force captain Cliff Brandon, a gruff and rough-around-the-edges man, wakes up one morning to find himself unexpectedly married to a young and beautiful Chinese woman named Shu-Jen. The two had met when Cliff, after a night of heavy drinking, purchased Shu-Jen's services as a housekeeper from her father. Despite his initial reluctance, Cliff soon finds himself falling for Shu-Jen and, when she becomes pregnant, he decides to do the right thing and marry her in a traditional Chinese ceremony. The happy couple and their newborn daughter spend time together at a forward base, but their bliss is short-lived as Cliff receives news that the base is under attack by Japanese bombers.
