In the midst of the Gorbachev era, a young man named Ivan struggles to find his direction in life. With college out of the question and mandatory military service looming, Ivan navigates his daily life working as a courier at a Russian newspaper and living with his divorced mother. His job brings him into contact with Professor Kuznetzov and his daughter Katya, a rebellious young woman. To provoke the professor, Ivan fabricates an affair with Katya, only to be surprised when she unexpectedly backs up his claim.
