The film tells the story of the US Army's First Ranger Battalion, formed during World War II, and its commanding officer Major Orlando Darby. Inspired by the British commandos, the unit was created to carry out specialized missions. The story follows the training of the Rangers in Scotland, their personal lives and relationships, and their first combat missions in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy, including the amphibious landing at Anzio.
