The film follows a group of North African volunteers who fight alongside French forces to liberate their motherland from German occupation. The story takes place from 1943 to 1945, with a coda years later. The characters include Saïd, a poor orderly, Messaoud, a skilled shooter who falls in love with a French woman, and Abdelkader, a corporal and intellectual who senses the injustice of their situation.
