In 1943, after defeating Rommel's forces in North Africa, the Allies set their sights on Southern Europe. To prepare for a possible invasion of Europe through Italy, they need to place observers on uninhabited islands in the Adriatic Sea to report on German troop movements and naval deployments. A British team of four men, code-named 'Force X', is dropped on a small island off the coast of Albania to carry out this secret operation, 'Plantagenet'. Despite assurances from HQ that the island is empty, they discover a German team of four men, led by Captain Krisling, sheltered in an old Byzantine monastery. With no working wireless transmitter, the British team is unable to contact HQ and must decide how to proceed. They eventually agree to a truce with the Germans and jointly rule the island, taking turns cooking, pulling watch-duty, and doing menial tasks.
