In 1938, Walter Neff, a seasoned insurance salesman, becomes embroiled in a deadly affair with Phyllis Dietrichson, the seductive wife of one of his clients. When Phyllis proposes to kill her husband to collect on an accident insurance policy, Walter concocts a plan to receive twice the payout by exploiting a double indemnity clause. But when Mr. Dietrichson is found dead on a train track, Walter's friend and insurance analyst Barton Keyes is suspicious of Phyllis's involvement.
