Dr. Cardwell, a bookish and unpopular doctor, is struggling to make a living in the small town of Big Bend. His fortunes change when notorious outlaw Red Bastian visits him for medical attention, and the doctor uses the payment to settle his debts. When Bastian's gang picks up a wounded hitchhiker, Dr. Cardwell takes her in and grows fond of her, despite the town's suspicions that she's Bastian's moll. As the G-men close in on the gang, Dr. Cardwell is forced to navigate a complex web of loyalty, deception, and danger to protect Jo and bring the outlaws to justice.
