A strong but world-weary 20-year-old solo mother, Leeanne, takes her one-year-old son, Sam, on a train to visit her mother on her birthday. However, her mother refuses to accept Sam, born out of wedlock, and Leeanne's father is unable to intervene. Meanwhile, Leeanne's brother, Brent, is secretly a thief who pretends to be a student or bible salesman to gain trust, then robs homes. But when a victim returns home during one of his robberies, Brent's plans go awry, and the lives of Leeanne's family and the victim's family are forever changed.
