College student Freckles Winslow returns to his hometown in Indiana to help his friend Danny Doyle, who's struggling to pay off a mortgage on his uncle's hotel. Along the way, he meets a Chicago gangster posing as Jack Leach, who's hiding from the law. Freckles' father is facing financial troubles due to a feud with the town banker, and Freckles decides that building a highway through the town could solve everyone's problems. The gangster, who claims to have connections to a big financier, arrives in town and proposes a deal that seems too good to be true.
