A wealthy couple, Cora and Matt, struggle to gain acceptance into New York's high society despite their lavish spending. Cora longs to be part of the elite, while Matt prefers a simpler lifestyle. They throw a lavish party to impress the "400" and hire a waitress, Sandy, to pose as their daughter. However, Sandy has already caught the eye of Harley, a socially prominent man, who is smitten with her despite her lack of interest in him.
