In an English village before Dunkirk, a grief-stricken Mr. Tom Oakley, still reeling from the loss of his wife and son during WWI, reluctantly takes in a 10-year-old boy named William, who has been evacuated from London. William is quiet, struggles with literacy, and is haunted by nightmares and self-doubt. Despite his initial reluctance, Mr. Tom forms a bond with William and discovers that the boy has been subjected to abuse at home.
