Nine-year-old orphan Pip Pirrip lives with his sister and her husband, a blacksmith, in rural Britain. While visiting his mother's grave, Pip is approached by Abel Magwitch, an escaped convict, who forms a bond with the boy despite initially threatening him. Pip receives an invitation to visit Mrs. Havisham, a wealthy recluse, and her niece Estella, with whom he becomes attracted. He also receives an education and allowance from an anonymous benefactor, sparking his curiosity about the benefactor's identity.
