In southern India, a young boy named Makbul grows up surrounded by wild and domesticated elephants in his village. He follows in his family's footsteps to become a mahout, or elephant handler, and forms a strong bond with an elephant calf named Vikrama. As he matures, Makbul's destiny is fulfilled, but times change and the forest operations cease to require elephants and their handlers. Vikrama is sold, and Makbul is tasked with delivering the elephant to its buyer. However, they soon discover that the buyer is corrupt and intends to resell Vikrama at a higher price. When the elephant kills its new mahout, Makbul must embark on a long journey to save Vikrama from further misfortune and navigate an uncertain future.
