In 1880s Salford, England, a widower and his three adult daughters live together in a shop. The father is miserly, tyrannical, and won't let his daughters date. One daughter decides to take matters into her own hands and proposes to the shop's poor but skilled bootmaker, forcing her father to treat him better and pay him a decent wage.
