In a struggling town in South-West Wales, a family of three siblings - Boyo, Sid, and Gwenny - live with their mother Marlene. Their father vanished when they were young, and Sid has grown obsessed with American culture, dreaming of joining him in the States. When a new mine opens, the brothers try to find work, but their mother's opposition and sabotage thwart their plans. As their mother's behavior becomes increasingly erratic, Sid and Gwenny start to isolate themselves, neglecting reality and descending into a dangerous downward spiral.
