The story follows Rachael, a young woman who meets her father Gene at her mother's funeral. Gene suffers from Korsakov's Syndrome, a form of retrograde amnesia, and believes Rachael is her deceased mother. Despite being unable to convince him of her true identity, Rachael decides to pretend to be her mother, allowing her to have "normal" conversations with Gene. As their relationship grows, Rachael visits Gene daily, incorporating elements from his past into their present connection. However, as she pieces together their history and plays out memories for Gene, her desire to be seen by her father for who she truly is becomes increasingly strong.
