A wounded American serviceman, suffering from amnesia, is on a hospital ship returning to the US. He's unaware of his identity and the US Army is struggling to identify him. Assuming he's one of four survivors of a farmhouse bombing in France, the Army sets out to uncover his true identity. Meanwhile, he adopts the name Johnny March and goes AWOL, traveling to four locations across the country to find someone who knows him. Along the way, he discovers that even in unfamiliar places, he evokes strong reactions from people who were connected to his past.
