Thirty-year-old Vince Papale faces a series of setbacks in the summer of 1976, including the loss of his substitute teaching job due to budget cuts. His wife's disappointment and eventual request for divorce further devastate him. Despite this, Vince finds solace in his part-time bartending job and playing football with friends. When the Philadelphia Eagles' new coach, Dick Vermeil, announces open tryouts, Vince takes a chance and decides to audition, drawing inspiration from his real-life story.
