Kathleen, a 12-year-old girl, lives in a grand house with a staff of caregivers, but her family is incomplete. She longs for a traditional family with a mother, father, and herself. To avoid disappointing her friends, she fabricates a family life. Her strained relationship with her nanny, Mrs. Farrell, prompts her father to hire Dr. Kent, a psychologist, as her new summer nanny. Meanwhile, her father is considering his new girlfriend, Lorraine, as his potential wife and Kathleen's future mother. Kathleen finds herself drawn to Dr. Kent, envisioning her as the perfect mother figure, while Lorraine remains distant and uninviting.
