Walter Gulick returns to his birthplace, Cream Valley, New York, after completing his military service. Despite growing up elsewhere, he always wanted to return to his roots. Initially, he hopes to become a mechanic, but ends up working as a sparring partner at a boxing camp. After a devastating right hook, Walter's path changes, and he's dubbed Kid Galahad by Willy Grogan, a likable but reckless gambler. As Walter gains success and falls in love with Rose, Willy's sister, the mob pressures them to throw Walter's next big fight.
