In the late 19th century, Ellen Creed takes in her mentally unstable sisters, Emily and Louisa, after their landlady threatens to institutionalize them. Ellen convinces their companion, Miss Fiske, to let them stay for a few days, but eventually, Miss Fiske discovers the sisters' erratic behavior and Ellen's plan to make their stay permanent.
