A young artist seeks inspiration from an older man and freedom from his own father in a wise and warm coming-of-age tale, loosely based on the director's own life. The film is infused with a love for impressionist art and follows the story of John, a young artist who wants to learn from the reclusive Russian immigrant Seroff, a master painter. Despite initial rejection, John's perseverance and gifts of vodka eventually win over Seroff, and the two form a bond. As the summer progresses, they learn new ways to see the world and all its colors.
