In 1930s North-West England, the Hardcastle family and their village face financial struggles amidst industrial decline. Harry's brief windfall from horse racing helps temporarily, but as the Great Depression worsens, he and his father are unable to find employment. As Harry leaves home to be with his pregnant partner, his sister Sally becomes increasingly burdened with finding a solution to the family's troubles.
