A struggling folk artist, Doug Blankenship, leaves his Army past and a girlfriend in Germany to live with his mother for 20 years. A stroke of luck introduces him to a German film producer, who brings Doug's screenplay ideas to Berlin, where they create "Love Songs For Scumbags". The film, about a Neo-Nazi couple fighting for custody of their child, runs parallel to Doug's descent into homelessness and mental illness. His 20-year-old daughter, now lost, arrives in Berlin seeking her father.
