Lucky Carson, a lone rider, witnesses Jim Thornton being chased by Bat Moulton and his gang. Instead of intervening, Lucky hides behind a boulder, avoiding trouble. Later, Thornton's horse rears and takes him over a cliff, leaving Lucky to find gold in Thornton's saddle bags. Lucky joins a medicine show and meets Ann Thornton, the dead man's niece, who is being threatened by Moulton over a jointly owned mine. Moulton accuses Lucky of stealing the gold and has him arrested, but Lucky is eventually cleared by a jury. However, Lucky flees the courtroom, thinking he's being pursued by the sheriff, only to be captured by Moulton's gang and forced to reveal the gold's location.
