In July 1939, Captain Alan Thorndike, an English big-game hunter, infiltrates Adolf Hitler's retreat in the Bavarian Alps and attempts to assassinate the German leader. Despite not having bullets in his gun, he loads it after spotting Hitler, but is caught by a German soldier and taken to Gestapo Major Quive-Smith. Thorndike refuses to sign a false confession and is tortured, eventually managing to escape and make his way back to Britain. However, he soon realizes that the Gestapo is still after him and goes into hiding. He meets a young woman named Jerry Stokes, who helps him evade capture and eventually joins him on the run.
