May, a young woman with a lonely childhood, finds herself isolated and awkward as an adult, working in an animal hospital. She has a crush on a mechanic named Adam, but her unusual behavior pushes him away. May then has a brief affair with her lesbian colleague Polly, but feels rejected when Polly meets someone else. After her beloved doll is broken, May becomes obsessed with creating a new friend for herself, using parts from her acquaintances.
