In June 1944, France is still under German occupation. Marguerite Duras, a writer and member of the French Resistance, is torn apart by the uncertainty of her husband Robert Antelme's fate after his arrest and deportation. She begins a complicated relationship with Pierre Rabier, a French agent working at the Gestapo, in an attempt to gain information about her husband's whereabouts.
