In a northern Swedish manor on a summer night in 1894, a complex web of social class separates a man and a woman. Miss Julie, the inexperienced yet authoritative daughter of the estate, attends the servants' party and is drawn to Jean, a footman who has traveled, speaks well, and refuses to conform. As Christine, Jean's engaged servant, sleeps, Jean and Miss Julie engage in a late-night conversation in the kitchen, which evolves from a power struggle to a soul-bearing exchange. By dawn, they long to shatter the shackles of class and flee Sweden together. When Christine awakens and heads to church, Jean and Miss Julie must make their own decisions.
