Jose Stern, a musician, is approaching 40 and feeling miserable. His band, The Borges, now plays children's birthday parties, a far cry from their former glory. He's lucky to have Dusty, his fiancée, a warm and supportive veterinarian, until she discovers a secret and kicks him out. Jose seeks help from his burnt-out friends, dates an ex-girlfriend, and reflects on his past in an effort to find himself and win Dusty back.
