Rick Kane, a talented surfer, travels to Oahu, Hawaii to ride the big waves, but his lack of knowledge about local customs and habits causes initial struggles. After being robbed by a local surf gang, he meets Chandler, a famous surfboard shaper, who takes him under his wing and teaches him how to read the waves and the difference between true surfers and those who surf for fame.
