In the midst of the first Gulf War, 13-year-old Jasira Maroun, physically mature but naive, is sent from Syracuse to Houston to live with her strict and distant Lebanese-born father. As she navigates her new surroundings, Jasira must confront her emerging sexuality, racial prejudice, and unwanted advances, all while struggling to assert her independence and find her place in the world.
